BAILEMOS SCHOOL HISTORY

The history of Bailemos School of Argentine Tango dates back to 2004 in which year Jan Chrostek and Maria Ukere opened tango dance parties or milongas together with public courses in Café Imperial in Na Poříčí street. We have been carrying on with these activities ever since and on top of that organizing seminars with international maestros, concerts and summer schools under the name of Tango Camp. We have performed and taught on various occasions in our country and abroad (accompanying concerts by Jaroslav Svěcený, benefit concert of Ligue Against Cancer in Prague Karolinum, as a part of events in Poland and Germany among others). At present time we offer courses in beautiful historical premises of Youth Center "Jednička" at Truhlářská st. 8 (see background photo). Our lecturers Honza, Julia and Lucka consider tango as a form of artistic expression based on mutual respect and creative freedom as well as space for meeting and getting to know each other.

Jan Chrostek happened to come across tango for the first time in 1999 during his studies in Paris (there was no tango in the Czech Republic yet) and immediately took to it. He spent another year in Paris in 2002/2003 and this time had opportunity to learn from Sebastian Arce who introduced him to modern dance style of tango combining its traditional forms with tango nuevo. In 2004 Honza opened his own tango school Bailemos and since then has been organizing courses, milongas and events. Multiple times he traveled to Buenos Aires where he learnt from various maestros who opened depth and richness of tango to him.  Honza lead seminars and performed in the Czech Republic as well as in Germany and Poland. He says: "Tango is a fascinating dance as improvisation gives birth every time to something new. So even after 20 years of dancing you do not get bored. It is important to keep searching for your own style which corresponds to your personal character and emotions."

Yulia Kravtsova has been devoted to music since childhood as she used to play piano at a musical school. She discovered tango in 2006 and it has been close to her heart ever since. Her dance has been influenced by maestros Sebastian Arce and Horacio Godoy while her passion to experiment in tango drew inspiration from Chicho Frumboli and Juana Sepulveda. Yulia organizes multiple social tango events among which stands out Prague tango marathon "Nuevo Emotions".

"I adore the basic character of tango which enables communication with partners from all over the world. I love the creation process: trying out, experimenting and mixing styles of tango salon and nuevo. However, close embrace of milonguero style stirs the deepest emotions in me."

Lucie Krejčí discovered tango in 2002 when visiting Buenos Aires. "Love at first sight," she says. "I had no idea at the time that you can dance it in other countries than Argentina. Many years on when I moved to Canada I found out how popular the dance was there and wasted no time registering into classes. Since then - almost 10 years now - I have been heavily engaged in it. I have traveled to Buenos Aires several times where my biggest influence were maestros and maestras such as Moira Castellano, Ariadna Naveira, Lucas di Giorgio, Pablo Pugliese, Mariana Dragone, Marika Laundry.  In Montreal I started teaching for Las Piernas tango school. I have always been lucky with my dance partners with whom I could practice which is what pushed my dance most I guess. I believe every dancer has to do "a few kilometres" for the body to understand. Tango for me is about expression of emotions, harmony with dance partner and with myself. It is a kind of meditation, relaxation and a way to myself. It strengthens men's and women's energies."
